The NFL is a zero-sum game. Following the Jacksonville Jaguars' signing of outside linebacker Dawuane Smoot, the team cut third-year defensive tackle Nick Thurman, per insider Aaron Wilson.
Thurman was signed by the Jaguars in January of this year to a Reserve/Futures deal following a practice squad stint with the team during the 2022 NFL season. Following the news, the 28-years old will seek an opportunity elsewhere.
Before arriving in Jacksonville last year, Thurman had spent time with the Houston Texans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots, and Atlanta Falcons. It was the latter two where he actually got playing time as he appeared in eight games during that time, including seven with the Patriots.
However, he was considered a longshot to make the Jaguars' 53-man roster for the 2023 regular season.
As for Smoot, he reunites with the pass-rush-needy Jaguars days before the start of training camp. After losing Arden Key in free agency, Smoot will help boost a unit led by starters Travon Walker and Josh Allen.
