Chicago Bears DT Justin Jones had A LOT to say in his media availability after Tuesday’s minicamp practice session. When he wasn’t delivering the most electric smack talk of the offseason to the Packers, he was raving over rookie DT Gervon Dexter.
It’s not always that veterans take kindly to their team drafting multiple players at their position in the draft, but Jones said he was excited when Chicago selected three defensive tackles in Dexter, Zacch Pickens and Travis Bell.
Jones mentioned that he sees a lot of similarities in Pickens and himself when he was entering the league. While he was extremely complimentary of Pickens, Jones lit up when discussing Dexter, who the Bears nabbed in the second round.
"He's going to be a force in this league. I really do believe that,” Jones said with conviction. “I haven’t seen anything like him in a very long time, and I don’t want to put him in a box with anybody else but the closest person I can see him as is like a leaner Linval Joseph."
Dexter presents plenty of promise as a player who could carve out a significant role for himself as the offseason carries on. He has a combination of power and athleticism that is found in some of the game's best defensive tackles. If the Bears can maximize his potential, the sky is the limit for the Florida product.
The Bears need leaders like Jones to pave the way for some of the talented young guys the team has brought in. Though training camp will undoubtedly raise the level of intensity, it seems as if Jones is lending himself to Dexter as a mentor, which is beneficial for everybody involved.
