The closer and closer we get to training camp, the closer and closer we get to getting an accurate idea of when San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy can fully return to football.
We were given another update on Monday, courtesy of NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. According to Pelissero, Purdy will continue his rehab in Jacksonville with quarterbacks coach Will Hewlett and Tom Gormely, an orthopadeic specialist. The NFL insider also mentions the development as a sign that Purdy "remains on track to be ready for the 2023 season".
Hewlett is considered as one of the best private QB coaches in the country and he has a relationship with head coach Kyle Shanahan. Per The Athletic's Ted Nguyen, Hewlett "works with the Quarterback Collective, which partners with several NFL coaches, including Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay, and helps college quarterbacks prepare for the draft with 6 Points and Tork Sports". He helped Anthony Richardson improve his passing accuracy ahead of the NFL Draft.
It's another step in the right direction and it's interesting to see Shanahan using his connection to help Purdy progress in his rehab. Hewlett will make sure all of Purdy's fundamentals are intact, which is big because Purdy won't necessarily have to learn how to throw again, but he's definitely going to have to "get back up to speed", per se. Hewlett can certainly help him get there.
Now, the next step is to see what happens in training camp.
