One NFL analyst lists one of the biggest things the Broncos need to do to have a successful season, and they didn't do it enough last year.
When Nathaniel Hackett was hired, the thought was he would "let Russ cook," and we all saw how that went. Russell Wilson wanted to throw the ball more, but that's different from what they should have done or how their offense should have been running. That is a huge reason their offense was the worst in the league, and the Broncos only won a handful of games.
Sean Payton has a different philosophy. He loves the run game and is fearless in running the ball a ton. Their offense will feature 21 personnel a lot and set up the play-action game. That is the recipe for success in 2023, as Mike Garafolo said on Good Morning Football.
"They were what? 21st in the league rushing-wise last year? That's not going to work for Russell Wilson. He needs a running game that he can work off of Sean Payton. For the last six years, he was the coach of the Saints; they were ranked in the top half of the league in rushing attack. We think of him and Drew Brees throwing the ball all over the place, but running the football was a big part of what Payton did in New Orleans and has got to be a big part of what he does in Denver."
This is a huge reason the Broncos were so invested in getting Dalvin Cook. They want to run the ball, and they want to use multiple running backs while doing it. They signed Samaje Perine in the offseason to help with that scheme and fill in while Javonte Williams recovers.
Having a running game that can be dominant will help this team win games. Not only that, but it will also allow Wilson to play his best football. Every time he has played a good season, it's by way of a similar offense that Payton will run. It's also how Payton has had successful offenses in the past. The Broncos have to run the ball more in 2023.
