If the Chicago Bears are going to compete for a division title in the very winnable NFC North this season, they'll need quarterback Justin Fields to take the next step in his development.

Fields, the No. 11 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, put up lackluster numbers as a rookie, but he showed how electric he can be during his second season in the NFL.

The former Ohio State standout rushed for 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns last season while also showing great touch on his deep passes.

Fields has the skills to be one of the top quarterbacks in the league. And he'll have a better supporting cast around him in 2023 thanks to the additions of players like wide receiver DJ Moore and rookie right tackle Darnell Wright.

Not only will Fields have more talent around him, but he'll also be a better on-field leader — at least it looks like that will be the case according to a recent report from ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler.

Fowler recently appeared on ESPN and reported that Fields has been showing a "nice command" of the Bears' offense. Fowler also noted that Fields is changing plays at the line of scrimmage and "taking ownership of things".

If feels like the rest of the NFL is sleeping on Fields and the Bears. Though I'm sure they don't mind. They'll be ready to surprise some folks this fall.

And if Fields truly takes that next step, they could surprise some folks in the playoffs, too.
