The Bills Mafia doesn't seem to love the latest staffing decision.
Eric Washington was promoted from the defensive line coach and senior defensive assistant to the assistant head coach and defensive line coach, the team announced.
At first glance, it appears that the fanbase isn't too thrilled with the front office's decision on the promotion. In fact, most of the entire fanbase seems vehemently against the promotion.
Mauricio Rodriguez from AtoZ Sports highlighted one of the biggest concerns with the recent promotion, and what could be the basis for the animosity towards the decision.
Not getting to Joe Burrow, who sat behind an extremely banged-up offensive line, in the Divisional Round back in January isn't the type of game that would scream a promotion was coming. But Washington will get a chance to prove the doubters wrong when the season starts.
If there's any truth to "you're only as good as your last game" then Bills Mafia rightfully has a reason to be upset. With Washington being the leader of the defensive line room, their inability to get to Burrow against an offensive line held together with duct tape and Elmer's glue is a terrible look. While there were plenty of outside factors contributing to the abysmal effort, coaching was partially to blame.
The abrupt departure of Leslie Frazier could contribute to the snap reaction of this being a "poor decision" from the front office as well. While the team has been stomped on the past few offseasons, the regular season defense has been beyond elite. With McDermott jumping in to call the plays and the team's inability to make a deep playoff run during a prime Super Bowl window, fans are becoming restless.
A quick search of Eric Washington on Twitter gives you all the information you need on how a percentage of the Bills Mafia feel about the staffing decision.
While the majority of the messaging seemed negative, there were some members of the mafia who are looking to hold onto the message from the front office: Trust the process.
Washington will have big shoes to fill and the microscope will undoubtedly be focused on him. With the way the past few weeks have gone at One Bills Drive, and their lack of postseason success, are you still trusting the process?
