The Texans will have the second pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
There is an expectation that whoever is drafted that high will end up being the face of the franchise for years to come. That is a lot of pressure that is immediately placed upon the shoulders of a young prospect.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans spoke with the media today as his players returned to Houston for the start of the offseason workout program.
Ryans stated his displeasure with the pressure that's placed on high draft picks.
'I think it's unfair to ask a guy just because you're picked No. 2 overall, you have to come in and you're the face of our franchise and you’re the leader," said Ryans. "I'm not going to put that type of weight on the shoulders of whoever that is that we pick."
Ryans spent a decade as a player in the NFL, so he should know how to cultivate a locker room. The first-time head coach makes it sound like whoever gets picked at No. 2 will be treated like any other player. Taking the pressure off will help a young quarterback focus on development and less on leading a group of veterans.
Ryans also mentioned that the team has leaders in the locker room already, so a rookie doesn't have to be one immediately.
I believe that quote gives great insight into the Texans' off-season strategy. The team has seemingly emphasized bringing in high-character veterans on one-year deals.
These moves seem to be just as much about building a culture as winning games in 2023. Ryans has been a part of winning cultures before, and he seems to have the Texans on the right path to accomplishing the same.
