The New York Giants are in a bit of a stand-off with star running back Saquon Barkley.
The Giants were planning on franchise tagging the RB for this season, but he would prefer a long-term extension from the team.
As one of the best overall running backs in the NFL when healthy, it does make some sense. A former Super Bowl champion is taking the side of the player in this scenario.
On Good Morning Football, former Patriots DB Jason McCourty explained why Barkley should get a new contract from the Giants.
McCourty notes that Barkley's production last season was elite, and it was in the tier alongside players that have all received a lucrative new deal or gotten tagged themselves this off-season.
The market has proven Barkley's worth to New York's offense. Paying a RB can always be a tough decision, though.
Many folks would say that it is the wrong move due to teams having championship-winning success with a cheaper option starting at RB. Those teams also include historic QBs like Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, etc. It isn't so black and white.
Barkley's role in the offense for the Giants is vital as he is extremely talented on the ground and has become more trusted in the passing game as a receiver and blocker.
Negotiations are still ongoing between the running back and New York, but a former champion thinks he is worth the money.
