The Bears have done a phenomenal job adding talent to the roster this offseason.
The major issues of wide receiver and run defense have been addressed, leaving the Bears with far fewer holes.
One national media outlet has the Bears adding an elite player in the 2023 NFL Draft to a unit that already looks stronger.
Kyle Stackpole of CBS Sports released his latest mock draft and gave the Bears an elite tackle prospect in Paris Johnson, Jr. at the ninth pick.
Stackpole said the following:
Ideally, one of Wilson, Carter or Van Ness would have fallen to No. 9. That didn't happen, but the Bears get a worthy consolation prize in Paris Johnson Jr. Coming off an impressive pro day, the Ohio State standout has the makings of being the No. 1 offensive lineman in this class.
Stackpole mentions Wilson, Carter, and Van Ness being best-case scenarios for the Bears. This is likely true, as no team had less sacks in 2022 than Chicago did.
Carter, Wilson, or Van Ness would immediately elevate the pass rush for the Bears.
However, Johnson Jr. would not exactly be a disappointing pick. Johnson has perfect size to play left tackle in the NFL, standing at 6'6" and weighing in at 315 pounds.
Johnson only has one season of left tackle experience, as he was the starting right guard in Columbus in 2021.
As the starting left tackle, Johnson anchored one of the most efficient offensive lines in the nation. The Buckeyes' line only allowed 12 sacks all season.
The line was also very effective at run blocking, as the team averaged just shy of 200 yards per game on the ground.
Johnson would likely be the left tackle if selected this high in the draft. While Braxton Jones showed promising signs in 2022, you don't let a good player prevent you from drafting a great player.
Johnson has possibly the highest ceiling of any tackle in the draft. The talented lineman has fluid movement and concentrated aggressiveness. If you watch him block, he moves like a tight end.
A line of Paris Johnson, Jr., Cody Whitehair, Lucas Patrick/Rookie, Nate Davis, and Teven Jenkins would give the Bears one of the strongest units in the league.
