The Denver Broncos are coming off of a season where they thought Russell Wilson would solve all of the previous problems they had, but instead, it feels like things got worse.
The last seven years of losing seasons have felt like they were just a quarterback away. They traded for Wilson, traded away a ton of draft capital and some good players for him, then signed him to a huge contract before seeing him play a snap in orange and blue.
The offense didn't fit him, especially with the coaching, offensive line, injuries, and a million other things around him. They went and got some key players this offseason that should help him next year, like the offensive line and a new head coach.
They were the worst offensive line in the league last year with the most sacks allowed, and their coaching was terrible, which is why Hackett was later fired. His offense just wasn't it, as they ranked dead last in offense at the end of the year.
But, this offense is one that we feel will help the Broncos more instead of Wilson. It may not be what Wilson wants, but Sean Payton doesn't care.
“Denver was going to let Russ cook, but now here comes 21 personnel,” an executive said in The Athletics' Reaction story. “All they need is Taysom Hill to take him out of short yardage. Big picture, they are trying to be physical. Their moves told you they are going to limit exposure to Russell.”
21 personnel, in case you don't know, is a formation with two back – one running back and one full back or two running backs – and one tight end. Usually, when you use 21 personnel a lot, you want to establish the run game.
Sean Payton loves to run the ball. I think we all know that. The Broncos being in 21 means Payton likely wants to run the ball heavily and set up the play-action for big shots down the field.
That's a huge reason they got Mike McGlinchey because he did it in Shanahan's offense as an offensive lineman. It's also why they signed Samaje Perine and Mike Burton, the full-back.
I think this is what's best for the Broncos. You likely won't see Wilson putting up huge numbers, but hey, we didn't see that last year either.
