One thing the Dallas Cowboys have done well over the last two seasons is play defense. On Friday, they got a new athletic baller in linebacker DeMarvion Overshown in the third round.
The groundwork for Overshown to come to Dallas was laid consistently over the last several months. Back in March during the NFL Combine, Overshown spoke on his dealings with the Cowboys before they turned his card in.
“I’ve talked to the Cowboys a lot," Overshown said. "You know, Dan Quinn, I’ve seen him a lot around the Texas facility while I was there, so being able to chop it up with him here during formal interviews and then talking to them at the Reese’s Senior Bowl. That defense is amazing and being able to play along some of the other guys, it would be fun.”
Overshown also talked about how he and the Cowboys spent time going over some specifics of his game.
“[We had] great meetings," said Overshown. "We really just watched my film. They talked about how they loved my relentless effort and there is a lot that they can do with me in their system. It was a great overall formal interview with them."
As far as how the Cowboys can use Overshown, we'll get back to that in a bit.
Overshown grew up 90 minutes from the Dallas area in Tyler, Texas. So, his familiarity with the Cowboys runs deep, and he talked about what it meant to get drafted by Dallas.
It means the world." said Overshown, via the team's website. Growing up around Cowboys fans and getting that call where it says 'The Star' and hearing Jerry Jones' voice, that meant the world to me. It's a feeling that I'll cherish forever. I'll never forget it.
The tears instantly started coming down my face once I saw that number. I couldn't have asked for a better situation. I'm blessed and I'm ready to get to work — I'm ready.
So, how will the Cowboys utilize the talents of Overshown? Well, the Cowboys aren't fools, they're going to do exactly what his coaches at Texas did, let him be effective in a multitude of ways.
"Any and everywhere," said Overshown. "Right now, we're gonna start at the WILL (weakside LB) position, the last time I spoke with [Dan Quinn]. We really detailed that position, but anywhere, everywhere. He has a plan for me: just moving me around, kinda like what I was doing in college. [It's] kinda what you see right now with the Dallas defense — moving a lot of players around."
Overshown has experience as a linebacker, on the defensive line, playing safety (original position), and even took snaps at cornerback in college. So, it's exciting to think about what a mastermind like Quinn can do with him.
