Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was left off a former NFL MVP's strange list this week.

Free agent quarterback Cam Newton is trying to work his way back into the NFL.

Newton, who was the NFL MVP in 2015, recently participated in Auburn's Pro Day to show that he can still be a contributor for an NFL team.

The former Carolina Panthers Pro Bowler has maintained that he doesn't think there are 32 quarterbacks in the NFL better than him, but he's willing to be a backup in certain situations.

On Wednesday, Newton put out a video that revealed the 12 quarterbacks he'd been willing to back up.

His list is…bizarre.

Newton included Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen, and Jalen Hurts — established stars — as well as future rookies like Anthony Richardson, Bryce Young, and CJ Stroud. He also included Malik Willis and Sam Howell.

Absent from his list is Mahomes.

Newton claims in his video that all he really wants is to win — even if he's a backup.

If that's truly the case, you'd think he'd include Mahomes (Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow wasn't included on his list, either).

I'm guessing Newton has enough self-awareness to know that he can't beat out Mahomes or Burrow. Maybe he thinks he can beat out an aging Rodgers. Or perhaps he thinks Allen or Hurts will suffer an injury and he could see the field that way. It's hard to know his thoughts because his logic seems terribly misguided.

Either way, it's not like there was ever a chance that Newton was coming to Kansas City to back up Mahomes.
