Payton has all of the qualities of a great head coach, which is why so many teams wanted him. But, obviously, there is only one team he wanted. He wanted to wear that orange and blue visor, his new signature look.
Now he has a job to do, which is obviously coaching the Broncos, but one that is also just as important if you ask me. He has to fix Russell Wilson, if possible.
That is a huge reason he was brought in. He has done it before with the Saints and Drew Brees, why can't he do it again?
One national NFL analyst that is pretty respected around the league seems to think Payton can fix Wilson, well, kind of.
Pro Football Focus analyst Sam Monson said:
"I don't know if anybody is capable of fixing Russell Wilson, but if I was putting my money on anyone it would be Sean Payton."
Payton keeps getting compared to guys like McCarthy and others as if they are similar coaches. And, in terms of resumes, they are. But, Payton can fix quarterbacks, as he has done it before with Drew Brees.
Those other guys, and the other candidates available, aren't fit for the job. The hire was about who would fit best with Wilson, and who could fix him. Sean Payton can do that, but also install an offense that will work for Wilson and the Broncos.
This hire was a great one, and if I was a betting man, I'd put money on Wilson having a much better season in 2023.
