The Chicago Bears didn’t finish first in much of anything aside from disappointment in 2022. But after some digging, Chicago’s offense was the best in the league at one metric that should translate to success in 2023.
Interestingly enough, the Bears were among the NFL’s best offenses when it came to efficiency on opening drives. Whether that was due to Justin Fields’ unique playmaking abilities or offensive coordinator Luke Getsy’s scheme, Chicago almost always came away with points on such drives.
The Bears scored on 70.6 percent of their opening drives, which led the NFL in a major way. The next closest teams were the Eagles, 49ers, Buccaneers and Raiders, who each managed to come away with points on 58.8 percent of their opening drives.
With that the Bears also led the league with the fewest punts on these drives. They ranked third in the league in points per drive, as not every drive would lead to a touchdown, and fourth in drives to reach the redzone.
Keep in mind that the Bears were able to march down the field to open the game and second half despite relying upon numerous young players in key roles. With boatloads of salary cap space and an improving cast of characters, expect the Bears’ offense to take major strides in 2023.
