Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes' dad, former New York Mets pitcher Pat Mahomes, caused quite a stir recently when he said his son thought he was going to be drafted by the Chicago Bears.
“Because they told him that they were going to draft him," said the elder Mahomes during an appearance on The Parkins and Spiegel Show. "They told him they were going to draft him, so we thought he was going to be the third pick overall and go to Chicago. He had a great meeting when he was there and liked all the guys that were doing stuff there. He thought he was going to be a Bear."
"And then once they traded up and got Mitch, it kind of hurt him. It really did."
On Tuesday, Mahomes addressed those comments from his dad.
"It wasn't that I thought the Bears were going to draft me," said Mahomes on Tuesday. "But I was told if they drafted a quarterback, that I would be the quarterback that they drafted. And that wasn't necessarily directly from their people, but that was told to my camp."
"So it did surprise me a little bit (when the Bears drafted Mitch Trubisky)," added Mahomes. "But they told me they weren't drafting a quarterback so that was the most surprising thing."
"He (Mahomes' father) acted like they were going to draft me for sure in that interview. And I was like 'I don't know if it was that serious'. They did say if a quarterback was drafted that I would be the guy they drafted."
Mahomes noted that early in the draft process he was viewed as a second or third-round pick, so he was just happy to be selected in the first round (the Chiefs drafted him at No. 10 overall).
I think it's pretty easy to discern what happened in 2017. Mahomes likely heard from his agent that Chicago was interested in drafting him (which is why he said it didn't come directly from the Bears).
Teams love to throw other teams off during the draft by showing interest in certain players and pushing info to agents/media. That's likely what was happening here. Mahomes, at the time, was considered a reach by the Chiefs. Throwing shade at the Bears in retrospect isn't fair considering Kansas City received plenty of criticism for drafting Mahomes at No. 10.
