The Chicago Bears received unexpected help from an unlikely source on Tuesday.

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay is known to be one of the league’s most outspoken owners. However, his recent comments might have helped to drive up Chicago’s asking price for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Colts introduced new head coach Shane Steichen on Tuesday. But at the introductory press conference Irsay tipped his hand at Indy’s draft plans.

“He likes picks, although the Alabama guy doesn’t look bad, I'll tell you” Irsay said, which was an obvious hint at Bryce Young.

In his defense, Irsay didn’t have to announce that the Colts are looking at taking a quarterback at the top of the draft. Whether they do so at their current pick (No. 4) or trade up remains to be seen.

That being said, for Irsay to vocalize his thoughts on drafting a quarterback could be enough to make quarterback needy teams drafting behind the Colts pick up the phone and call Bears GM Ryan Pace.

Much of the draft process involves tons of smoke and mirrors. Intentional misdirection is a common theme between teams searching for certain players. Poles and the Bears should write Irsay a thank you note for his reckless honesty if the team elects to trade the top pick in the draft.
