The San Francisco 49ers' star running back Christian McCaffrey doesn't have better odds to lead the league in rushing than one NFC quarterback.
According to Betonline.ag, McCaffrey has the 13th-best odds to win the 2023 rushing title. That's low, but McCaffrey has never really been a guy that finishes seasons with a ton of rushing yards, as he is more of an all-purpose guy.
The names above McCaffrey's are Jonathon Taylor, Nick Chubb, Derrick Henry, Bijan Robinson, Josh Jacobs, Saquon Barkley, Tony Pollard, Rhamondre Stevenson, Breece Hall, Justin Fields, and Miles Sanders.
A few things to take away from that list: Rhomdre Stevenson above McCaffrey is funny. Secondly, you read that right: Justin Fields is also above McCaffrey. Is it crazy for a quarterback to be above the best all-around running back in the league in rushing yards? Probably. But that's the world we live in now.
Fields is good and was a 1,000 yards rusher just last season, as did McCaffrey. However, the 49ers have much more weapons to use and a better pass game in the Kyle Shanahan offense.
McCaffrey has never led the league in rushing yards, even in 2019, his best year when he rushed for 1,300 yards. He isn't that kind of player because of the volume and ability to catch the pass too.
This doesn't mean that McCaffrey isn't good because he is still the best all-around running back in the league when healthy. But you also have to factor in the "when healthy" part. McCaffrey is also a running back that takes a lot of beating throughout the season. He has missed a lot of games in his career. Luckily he was mostly healthy last season.
Now, if there are odds for running backs with the most all-purpose yards or scrimmage yards, you better believe McCaffrey will be top three.
