NASHVILLE — Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel announced on Wednesday that the team had elected seven captains for the 2023 season.
From the offense, QB Ryan Tannehill, RB Derrick Henry, and C Aaron Brewer were selected. DT Jeffery Simmons, S Kevin Byard, and LB Azeez Al-Shaair are the captains from the defense. LS Morgan Cox is the rep from the specialists.
"Probably a few more than what we've had [in the past], but there was a clear line of demarcation there, so that's why we felt to go in that direction," said Vrabel of the seven captain choices.
The selections of Tannehill, Henry, Byard, and Simmons do not come as a surprise. They have all been voted captains in the past. Even Cox and Brewer could have been expected as they are the longest tenured Titans player in their respective position groups.
Azeez Al-Shaair, however, I do find a bit intriguing. It's not all that common for a non-quarterback to join a team in the offseason and be voted captain just a few months later. Al-Shaair has been an exemplary leader since arriving in Nashville, and his selection as captain by his teammates over some of the other experienced players on defense is a big testament to that.
