The San Francisco 49ers made the headline move of trade deadline day when they acquired defensive end Chase Young in exchange for a compensatory third-round pick.
But there is one hurdle he has to pass before the trade becomes official.
The trade is pending a physical, which might not be completely straightforward for Young given his injury history.
Young was the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2020 as he enjoyed a stellar first season in helping Washington to a surprise NFC East title.
But Young suffered a torn ACL and patellar tendon in Week 10 of the 2021 season. He underwent an ACL reconstruction and did not return until Week 16 of the 2022 campaign in a Commanders loss to the 49ers.
Concern over the long-term health of Young's knee may explain why the Niners were able to get him for such a low cost, and it is that history that might make San Francisco a little more nervous for his physical than they would be otherwise. The trade would be cancelled were Young to fail a physical.
But there has been nothing on the field from Young this season to suggest he would do so. Young has 38 pressures so far in 2023, tallying five sacks and nine quarterback hits in a bounce-back season, his performances raising hope he can provide the spark a surprisingly ineffective 49er pass rush clearly needs following the defense's recent slump.
