Losing players in free agency is never fun, but at least there's a chance to mitigate the loss, somewhat, thanks to the NFL's compensatory draft pick system.

How the actual system works is unknown, but the method of determining which teams receive what picks essentially boils down to as such: The bigger the contract signed by the departed player, the higher the draft pick, but teams will never receive anything higher than a third-rounder. But, the picks are cancelled out once teams sign a player, or players, in free agency. The NFL awards 32 picks, in all, each year and teams are given no more than four picks, apiece.

Teams are also awarded third-round compensatory selections for two years if they lose a minority coach or executive to a promotion with another team. And, they receive individual picks for each coach/executive, like the San Francisco 49ers and DeMeco Ryans and Ran Carthon.

San Francisco traded the 2024 third-round pick it received for Ryans and Carthon to the Washington Commanders in the deal that landed them Chase Young. Ironically that selection will be used by the 49ers' former assistant GM Adam Peters, who left to head up the Washington front office shortly before Super Bowl 58.

But the 49ers still have plenty of draft capital to work with having been awarded five compensatory selections, which were confirmed by the NFL on Thursday. San Francisco's tally is the most in the league.

49ers' compensatory selections in the 2024 draft

  • 3rd round, 99th overall
  • 4th round, 132nd overall
  • 5th round, 175th overall
  • 6th round, 211th overall
  • 6th round, 215th overall

The confirmation of the picks officially takes the Niners' tally of selections for this year's draft to 11.

San Francisco may not use all of them, with trades up and down the board a typical feature of the 49ers drafts, but the high number of picks will allow John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan to infuse a top-heavy and expensive roster with a lot of young and affordable talent as they look to ensure the franchise's Super Bowl window extends well beyond 2024.
