Terique Owens is hoping to follow in his father's footsteps in the NFL, and Hall of Famer Terrell Owens was on hand to watch his audition for the San Francisco 49ers.
Owens was an interested onlooker at Levi's Stadium on Wednesday, with his son taking part in San Francisco's local pro day ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.
He was one of 44 players invited to the event, the Missouri State receiver having previously met with the 49ers during Missouri's pro day.
The younger Owens spoke to reporters afterwards about his father's involvement in the pre-draft process.
"He's been involved tremendously," Owens said. "We've been working all through the year, putting work in the offseason. It means a lot that he's out here supporting me."
Asked what advice his father has shared with him, he replied: "The best ability is availability. So, obviously taking care of my body, obviously staying on the field. Make sure I'm doing a little bit of something every day and just getting one percent better every day."
Owens had 28 receptions for 528 yards, averaging 18.9 yards per catch, and four touchdowns for Missouri State last year.
After that modest but efficient production at the FCS level, he is realistic about how he will enter the league.
"Honestly, I started football late, so I'm a late bloomer to this. But I see myself going as an undrafted free agent, he explained.
"Obviously, I've been working and obviously trying to get that opportunity to get drafted. But, like I said, I'm a late bloomer, and I've just been progressively getting better and hoping to get an opportunity to get drafted."
Whether he did enough to convince the 49ers to give him that opportunity remains to be seen but, for one day at least, Owens emulated his father in wearing 49ers colors.
