The 2024 preseason is officially over for the Detroit Lions. Now it's time to shift gears towards building the initial 53-man roster. The Lions will begin their cuts as early as potentially Saturday night  and will conclude them on August 27th at 4 P.M. ET. We built this tracker to keep you abreast of every cut that happens along the way. 

2024 NFL roster cuts Important details:

There are multiple ways for teams to remove players from their roster. Not every cut will be the same. Here's the terminology to watch out for:

  • Release: This is for players that have four or more accrued seasons in the league. These players will immediately become free agents and can sign where they like immediately. The Lions are able to immediately sign these players back to the practice squad if they'd like.
  • Waived: This is for the younger players that have less than four accrued seasons. These players will go to the waiver wire where NFL teams have the ability to put a claim on the player. If that player does not claimed, they become a free agent and can sign wherever they want or come back to the Lions to be on the practice squad. 
  • Waived/Injured: A similar set up to the waived situation, the big difference is if the player doesn't get claimed, they revert back to the Lions and go on injured reserve.

The Lions have made no trades at this time.

Practice Squad rules

The Lions can sign players they've either released or waived tot heir practice squad once those players are officially free agents. they can also choose sign players released or waived from other teams. Each team has 16 players on their practice squad. A 17th player can be added provided that that they are an International Pathways player.
