Strengths
- Play Strength and Contact Balance: Jeanty might be short, but has an incredibly stout frame that he's maximized to the fullest. Defenders bounce off of him like a pinball and he breaks tackles with ease.
- Agility: Jeanty doesn't have the best surroundings and he can mitigate that quickly. He has an innate ability to create space for himself with a quick jump cut in the hole and evade tacklers in open space.
- Vision: Jeanty knows where to go with the football. He takes great angles in open space and manipulates defenders to create extra yards. In zone concepts, Jeanty knows how to hit the hole
- Pass blocking: Jeanty has a thick and stout frame and can handle defenders in the passing game. His short stature allows him to get the leverage advantage and stack them in the hole.
Weaknesses
- Size: Jeanty is a somewhat smaller running back who won't be for everybody. He packs on plenty of size and muscle for his size, but lacks the ideal build for a bell cow running back.
- Breakaway Speed: Speed overall isn't an issue for Jeanty. He's got plenty of explosiveness and burst, but the breakaway speed isn't as consistent as you'd like to see from a projected first-round pick. He looks like someone who will run a 4.45 40-yard dash.
Player Evaluation
Jeanty is one of the best running backs I've ever watched at the college level. The offense he plays on doesn't have much on the offensive side of the football and it makes things harder for Jeanty. He shrugs it off and carries the team on his back.
While he's not the fastest player out there, his combination of physicality, agility and contact balance is spectacular. He is single-handedly carrying the Boise State offense and they might make the College Football Playoff.
The best part about Jeanty is that he could fit into any offense. He would be best utilized in a scheme that would maximize his ability to jump cut and that would be one that uses wide zone a substantial amount.
Player Comparison
LaDanian Tomlinson
It feels crazy to compare Jeanty to a Hall of Fame running back, but this comparison comes from a strictly playstyle perspective. Jeanty has a similar build to Tomlinson, jump cuts at a high level and is a true three-down running back.
That skillset is also why Jeanty is likely going to be a first-round pick. He's drawing comparisons to Barry Sanders from a production perspective and it's completely valid. Jeanty is the type pf player who could transform your offense from day one.
