The New Orleans Saints finally got a deal done with second-round rookie quarterback Tyler Shough recently. After plenty of negotiations and observations around the NFL, the young QB got a fully-guaranteed contract as a rookie.
Shough isn't settling after getting his deal inked, though. He doesn't want to waste any time before making an impact for Kellen Moore's offense in New Orleans.
Tyler Shough sets lofty expectations for himself in year one
In a recent interview with former NFL head coach Jon Gruden, Tyler Shough shut down any idea that he needs to sit in year one. Instead, Shough wants to hit the ground running as a rookie.
“No, man. My expectation is to go out there and play at the highest level I can. You saw it from Bo Nix and Daniels last year. Why not?” — Shough when asked if he expects to sit and watch/play a little bit as a rookie

Of course, those seasons from Daniels, Nix, etc. do not come around particularly often. Keep in mind that Shough was a second-round pick (40th overall). Those other two were selected early in the first round and immediately knew they would be the starters for their teams to begin their NFL career.
Shough's confidence is electric, though. He doesn't come off as cocky in the interview, but rather, he sees himself as a legitimate long-term option for the Saints and wants to show that his college experience and physical tools can help him produce in year one in black and gold.

Shough's rookie contract
As I noted earlier, the contract, a four-year deal, is fully-guaranteed for Shough. The precedent on deals that came before Shough in round two cornered the Saints into the position to give him that sort of factor in his compensation.
The deal for him also includes another unique piece, though. According to Nick Underhill, Shough received a benefit in his deal where he will have league minimum salaries, followed by a roster bonus of the remainder that he is due all at once, annually.
It remains to be seen if Shough will win the QB battle for the Saints to begin his pro career. He's competing with Spencer Rattler, and both won't back down anytime soon when it comes to winning the job.
