The Kansas City Chiefs kicked off their first training camp practice of 2025 with a bang.
On the first play of 7-on-7 scrimmaging, quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed a deep pass to speedy wide receiver Xavier Worthy down the sideline.
Chiefs' offense is focused on improving the deep passing game in 2025
The Chiefs have not been able to stretch the field consistently over the past few years. They planned on changing that in 2024, but long-term injuries to wide receivers Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown set them back. Worthy was a deep threat at times last season, but defenses were able to key in on him since there were no other legitimate deep threats.
A now fully healthy Rice and Brown, along with a more polished Worthy, will allow Kansas City's offense to refocus on establishing the deep passing game. Mahomes reiterated that while speaking to the media after practice on Tuesday.
"That's what we got to do," Mahomes said. "We got to keep doing it, though. We got great corners, so there's going to be a lot of challenges for us. Even on some of those that we throw incomplete down the field, we can talk through those routes and talk through that stuff. The mindset is getting back to throwing the ball down the field. If we can do that, it'll open up the rest of the offense."
Worthy wasn't the only WR to catch a deep pass from Mahomes, as third-year special teams standout Nikko Remigio had what Chiefs reporter Matt McMullen called the play of the day.
It's safe to say there are going to be plenty of bombs thrown throughout training camp. If the WR group can stay healthy, Mahomes could have the most explosive complement of weapons that he's had since early in his career. That will open things up for tight end Travis Kelce to do his thing in the intermediate part of the field, while also making life easier for the Chiefs' rushing attack.
