Browns are now on the edge of bracing for major impact due to an unfortunate injury during training camp
Browns are bracing for major impact due to a possibly major training camp injury.
Day 6 of Cleveland Browns training camp is one the franchise likely wishes they could rewind and do over.
The injury bug hit on Tuesday — and it may have struck in a major way. After being riddled with injuries the past two seasons, the Browns are already seeing that unfortunate trend resurface in 2025.
Browns bracing for possible bad news with CB Martin Emerson Jr.
Cornerback Martin Emerson Jr., entering the final year of his rookie contract, went down with what is being called an Achilles injury during Tuesday’s practice. Emerson, a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State, is expected to undergo further testing on Wednesday to determine the severity of the injury, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.
There isn’t much optimism surrounding the injury. Emerson was reportedly emotional and appeared to know immediately that it could be serious after going down during 7-on-7 drills. If confirmed, Cleveland may now be without their starting boundary corner opposite Denzel Ward for the season.
Emerson had a down year in 2024, much like the rest of the Browns roster that finished 3-14. Just one season earlier, he recorded four interceptions and was in serious consideration for a Pro Bowl selection. The timing couldn’t be worse for a player looking to prove his value in a contract year.
Cleveland does have Greg Newsome II, who has boundary experience but has primarily played in the slot the past couple of seasons. If Newsome shifts outside, players like Cameron Mitchell, Myles Harden, and Nik Needham could compete for the slot corner role in Emerson’s absence.
For now, all the Browns can do is hope for good news from the MRI. Until then, it appears Cleveland may have lost a key starter before the season even begins.
