Dallas Cowboys fans want an explosive playmaker in the backfield. They’re hoping to get it in fifth-round rookie running back Jaydon Blue.

As a late-round draft pick, however, Blue needs to make a statement in the preseason as he battles veterans Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders for carries. So far, he’s catching the coaching staff’s attention. After a strong start without pads, the production has carried over into the team’s first few padded practices.

On Tuesday, Cowboys offensive coordinator Klayton Adams touched on Blue’s strong start to his NFL career.

“Jaydon’s been awesome,” Adams told reporters. “He’s fun to be around—he’s got a bubbly personality, loves football, and is extremely competitive.”

For Adams to describe the young running back’s attitude in such positive light is relevant due to unfounded rumors spread around before training camp. A former Cowboys staffer said leading up to training camp, Blue was causing some worry because of a “lazy” approach, but clearly, the team disagrees. Insiders fought back the narrative, and all we’ve seen from Blue in camp has been the opposite of lazy.

But Blue’s attitude and demeanor won’t necessarily translate into productive rush attempts. Fortunately, that hasn’t been the only thing about him turning heads.

“When the ball’s in his hands, exciting things happen,” Adams added. “It feels like we got here 10 seconds ago, but we’re already a week into camp, and I can’t wait until tomorrow to see what some of these guys are going to do. In my opinion, (Blue) is blossoming.”

Important weeks are ahead for Blue as he tries to earn a significant role on Brian Schottenheimer’s offense. As a late-round rookie, that’s hard to do. But the Cowboys want to emphasize the run game, and the evidence shows he has a shot to be the most explosive player in the backfield. He will have a role. Now the question is, how large will it be?
