A Tennessee Vols assistant coach is expected to be a head coaching candidate after the 2025 season.
On3 recently listed several Power conference coordinators that could soon be in the mix for a head coaching job and they included Vols defensive coordinator Tim Banks. They pointed out, however, that it will likely take a power-conference job to lure him away from Tennessee, partially because Banks is currently making over $2 million a year at UT.
From On3: Banks has been either a DC or co-DC since 2007, but his time at Tennessee has allowed him to truly shine. His unit is the bigger reason the Volunteers went to the College Football Playoff last season. His group also doesn’t appear in danger of dropping off this season — even though Tennessee’s offense may take a step back. He’s making $2.1 million a year at Tennessee, so it probably would take a power-conference head coaching job to pry him away.
There’s no doubt that Banks wants to be a head coach, but it appears he’s waiting for the right opportunity. And that’s wise — not every job is ripe for success.
Banks is the only defensive coordinator that Josh Heupel’s had at Tennessee, so it’ll be quite a loss for the Vols if/when the veteran defensive coordinator leaves Rocky Top.
