The Kansas City Chiefs have a new face joining them in St. Joseph, Missouri, as training camp marches toward its end.

According to multiple reports from media members at practice, the Chiefs have signed RB Michael Wiley to the 90-man offseason roster. A former standout with the University of Arizona from 2019-2023, Wiley signed with the Washington Commanders as an undrafted free agent in 2024. He was also selected by the UFL’s D.C. Defenders in their rookie draft that summer. In three preseason games for the Commanders in 2024, Wiley had 17 carries for 67 yards and two touchdowns, as well as six receptions for 37 yards.

He didn’t make the 53-man roster cuts, but was promptly signed to the Washington practice squad, where he spent the entire 2024 NFL season. He signed a reserve/future deal with the team, but was released ahead of training camp to make room for veteran OLB Von Miller.

Wiley joined DE Nate Matlack, who was added to the 90-man offseason roster on Monday. Both moves are the corresponding roster moves to S Deon Bush (Achilles) and DE Janarius Robinson (toe/foot), who were placed on injured reserve.

There seemed to be a level of expectation that the Chiefs would sign a defensive back with Bush heading to injured reserve, but they instead chose to add another player to the backfield. Wiley will have just a few days of training camp and two preseason games to make an impression on the coaching staff. He’ll likely be competing to earn a spot on the practice squad in Kansas City.

At 5-foot-11 and 207 pounds, Wiley’s best asset is his ability as a receiver. He caught 123 receptions for over 1,100 yards and 12 touchdown receptions while with the Wildcats in college.
