Bills forced to bring in emergency reinforcements just days before upcoming preseason game
Injuries continue to be an issue at One Bills Drive.
The Buffalo Bills are dealing with an injury bug. With the regular season just weeks away and injuries piling up on both sides of the football, the team signed safety Ter Herndon. In a corresponding move, the team released tight end Matt Sokol.
Herndon is a versatile player who has shown flashes at the boundary and slot corner positions throughout his career, while also getting more than a couple of snaps at deep safety. While playing primarily in the slot for the Jaguars last season, Herndon had six pass breakups and 14 run stops while generating a career-high seven pressures as a blitzer.
A Swiss-army knife of sorts, as Herndon’s career snap counts show him all over the field.
- 1,495 at boundary corner
- 1,195 at slot corner
- 234 in the box
- 167 at deep safety
- 18 at the line of scrimmage
Welcome to Buffalo, Tre Herndon
The undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt most recently played for the Saints in 2024 and was with the Jaguars from 2018 to 2023. Herndon has played in 84 games with 34 starts in his seven-year career. Herndon also had brief stints with the Colts and the Giants.
With an already depleted unit at safety, the acquisition, if nothing else, will provide some key depth.
Both starting safeties for the Bills couldn’t suit up for the team’s first preseason game. With Taylor Rapp and Cole Bishop participating in light drills for the team this morning, it’s unclear when they’ll be back at full health, hence the reinforcements.
Herndon signing did have some members of the Bills Mafia scratching their heads. Does this mean either starting safety might be out for longer? Was there another injury at safety, or was this just the front office bringing in more bodies to compete?
Either way, with the regular season approaching and injuries allowing others to rise to the occasion, it’ll all be on Herndon to absorb as much of the defense as possible and shine during his reps, both in practice and in the upcoming preseason matchup against the Chicago Bears.
