The San Francisco 49ers are dealing with a multitude of injuries along their offense, and that is no secret. At the wide receiver position, there are a ton of questions right now. Brandon Aiyuk probably won’t be ready to begin the season, based on comments from head coach Kyle Shanahan. Jauan Jennings is dealing with an injury, as is Jacob Cowing. Rookie Jordan Watkins is also dealing with an ailment.

The Houston Texans just made a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles that interested the 49ers as well. Houston sent wideout John Metchie to Philly for a backup tight end and a day three pick swap.

According to Jordan Schultz, the 49ers attempted to trade for Metchie in a search for wide receiver depth. The Eagles simply outbid them on the trade market.

The WR depth remains a notable concern for San Francisco, and they are clearly aware of the questions for that part of their roster. Their interest in Metchie may point to another potential trade or free agent signing coming in the near future for Shanahan’s team. There’s no way to know for certain, though.

Meanwhile, George Kittle has impressed throughout training camp, and running back Christian McCaffrey looks healthy as he tries to bounce back after a difficult season last year due to injury. Both those players project to be key pieces for the passing game in SF.

The attempt to trade for Metchie is a clear warning signal to the players for the 49ers vying for a roster spot at receiver. The front office has clearly communicated with the staff, and there is a reason for them to want to add pass catching talent.
