The Philadelphia Eagles are bringing in outside reinforcement amid Tanner McKee‘s finger injury and ahead of their Week 1 regular-season matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, the Eagles have acquired quarterback Sam Howell from the Minnesota Vikings.
“Trade! The #Vikings are sending QB Sam Howell to the #Eagles, sources tell me and @RapSheet. Minnesota gets a 2026 5th-round pick and a 2027 7th. Philadelphia gets a 2026 6th and Howell, an experienced backup for Jalen Hurts while Tanner McKee deals with an injury,” Pelissero wrote on X/Twitter on Sunday morning.
Howell, who played college ball for the UNC Tar Heels, has suited up for 20 NFL games over three seasons. He was the full-time starter for the Washington Commanders in 2023, before spending the 2024 season as Geno Smith’s backup with the Seattle Seahawks.
In 2023, Howell threw for 3,946 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions for a 63.4% completion rate. He saw action in just three games last fall, completing five of 14 passes for 24 yards and one interception.
Before Howell entered the NFL, he was a star at North Carolina, where he racked up 10,283 yards, 92 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions, completing 63.8% of his passes over three seasons.
This trade just goes to show that the Eagles are not going to keep rookie Kyle McCord or Dorian Thompson-Robinson around come cutdown day on Tuesday, August 26, at 4 p.m. ET. While both made some plays throughout the preseason, neither did enough to show that they’re a reliable QB2.
As for McKee, he’s proven that he is a legit backup quarterback and turned heads with a dominant performance in the Eagles’ first preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals, throwing for 252 yards and two touchdowns. Hopefully, his injury doesn’t keep him away too long.
