Shilo Sanders’ preseason mistake leads to inevitable roster decision by Tampa Bay Buccaneers and it could get worse
Sanders is off the roster. But can he make the practice squad?
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have started their path to trimming down the roster to 53 players ahead of Tuesday’s deadline and now we know where one of the biggest names of the rookie class stands. Undrafted rookie safety Shilo Sanders is being waived, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The decision comes as no surprise as Sanders’ play didn’t exactly stand out throughout training camp nor the preseason. Though he’s been one of the most widely covered players on the Bucs roster, his chances of making the team were always slim.
“We’re hoping he gets claimed on waivers,” Sanders’ agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey added via Schefter.
Shilo Sanders’ ejection during preseason finale raises questions about practice squad chances, too
A to Z Sports’ Bucs expert Evan Winter accurately predicted Sanders to be waived earlier this weekend. Below is an excerpt from his full 53-man roster prediction and according to him, things could get worse for the rookie as not even a practice squad spot “doesn’t even seem like an option”:
“Shilo Sanders’ ejection on Saturday night sealed his fate when it comes to making the 53-man roster and at this point, the practice squad doesn’t even seem like an option after Rashad Wisdom’s strong game against the Bills. Even with Izien’s oblique injury, the Bucs carry four safeties simply due to the versatility of the defensive backs.” – Evan Winter
Winter’s projection included Antoine Winfield Jr., Tykee Smith, Kaevon Merriweather, and Christian Izien. The Buccaneers have until Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET to finalize roster cuts.
