Shortly after the Philadelphia Eagles traded the Minnesota Vikings for quarterback Sam Howell, new details emerged surrounding quarterback Tanner McKee’s injury.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday afternoon that McKee suffered a fractured right thumb. He added that it’s not too serious since it’s only the top of his thumb.
“#Eagles QB Tanner McKee suffered a fractured thumb, per The Insiders, that will bring his availability for Week 1 into question. Not a major injury for the clear-cut No. 2, as it’s just the top of the thumb. The Sam Howell trade likely would’ve happened anyway,” Rapoport wrote on X/Twitter.
As Rapoport noted, it looks like Howell was in the Eagles’ plans regardless of whether or not McKee’s injury happened. That confirms that the Eagles won’t be keeping rookie quarterback Kyle McCord or Dorian Thompson-Robinson come roster cutdown day on Tuesday, August 26.
Howell brings way more experience to Philly than either of those two quarterbacks could offer.
Howell, who was a star QB for the UNC Tar Heels, has suited up for 20 NFL games in three seasons. He was the full-time starter for the Washington Commanders in 2023, before spending the 2024 season as Geno Smith’s backup with the Seattle Seahawks. He played in three games last fall, completing five of 14 passes for 24 yards and one interception.
The Eagles are set to take on the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1 of the 2025 regular season on Thursday Night Football. If McKee isn’t ready to go, then Howell will suit up as QB2 for the Eagles.
