Pete Carroll details his new plan to attack what is suddenly a huge issue the Raiders didn’t have before their last preseason game
Pete Carroll and the Las Vegas Raiders have a plan for how they plan to address the backup quarterback situation.
One of the worst things that could have happened to the Las Vegas Raiders did, as backup quarterback Aidan O’Connell fractured his wrist in his last preseason game, and is now expected to be out for 6-8 weeks.
Despite his pretty bad preseason showing, O’Connell was still going to be the backup because Cam Miller, the project rookie, is just not ready to be the backup yet. With O’Connell out, the Raiders now have an issue that they didn’t have before the final preseason game – Las Vegas has to look for its next backup quarterback.
Pete Carroll has somewhat of a plan in store.
Pete Carroll has an idea of what he wants in a backup quarterback
It’s joked about often – being the backup quarterback, and sometimes people even make fun of the backup, but it’s truly a position that not just anyone can have. That is why Miller, the Raiders’ sixth-round pick, is not going to be the backup. Pete Carroll and the Raiders know what they want.
“We’re looking everywhere to find the best guy that fits us… We’re looking for an experienced player who can help us,” Carroll told reporters on Sunday.
There are a ton of good options out there, whether it be through the waiver wire with roster cuts coming up, or through trade. The likely scenario is that they sign someone who gets cut, like a Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who was just waived by the Philadelphia Eagles, or one of the many Cleveland Browns quarterbacks who could get cut.
Guys like Tyler Huntley, Ryan Tannehill, Kenny Pickett, Thompson-Robinson, and so many others are all guys who have played in meaningful football games as starters. Now, granted, it didn’t work out for them, or we would be talking about them as starters and not guys getting cut, but the hope is that it doesn’t come to a point where they have to use the backup.
Right now, it’s about finding a guy who can run the offense and limit mistakes that maybe a younger guy would make. We could hear pretty soon who that would be.
