Philadelphia Eagles reportedly release local rookie quarterback soon after Sam Howell trade
The local kid won’t be staying after all.
The Philadelphia Eagles have released their 2025 sixth-round pick out of Syracuse, quarterback Kyle McCord, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
This move was not surprising at all since the Eagles made up their mind at QB3 when they traded the Minnesota Vikings for experienced veteran quarterback Sam Howell on Sunday morning.
McCord completed only 15 of 35 passes with an interception in the Eagles’ preseason finale win over the New York Jets. He wrapped up his preseason, completing 24-of-56 passes for 191 yards with a touchdown, two interceptions, and a 43.1 passer rating.
McCord, a Philly native, took the jump to the NFL following an impressive senior campaign at Syracuse, topping the FBS with 4,779 passing yards and 34 touchdowns.
There’s a slim chance he re-signs to the Eagles’ practice squad if he’s passes through waivers but considering Tanner McKee is a proven solid backup and his thumb injury isn’t too serious, there’s really no reason for him to take up a spot on the PS.
In addition to McCord, the Ealges also moved on from quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Thompson-Robinson appeared in the Eagles’ first two preseason games, where he completed 10-of-16 passes for 73 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception.
The Eagles have until Tuesday, August 26 at 4 p.m. ET to cut their roster down to 53 players.
