The Indianapolis Colts made multiple moves that shocked fans as they finalized their 53-man roster. One of the moves many disagreed with was their choice to waive young age edge rusher Isaiah Land.

Many believed Land would get claimed on waivers, but on Wednesday, that didn’t come to fruition. The crisis seemed to be avoided with Land now free to rejoin the Colts’ practice squad, but this story sadly had a different ending.

Isaiah Land’s time with the Colts ends with him choosing to sign with the Cowboys’ practice squad

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Isaiah Land (55) warms up at Lucas Oil Stadium, Sunday, Nov. 26, 2023, before Tampa Bay Bucs at the Colts.

According to Patrik Walker and Nicole Hutchison, Land won’t be rejoining the Colts after all; instead, he is signing with the Dallas Cowboys as a member of their practice squad. Land began his NFL career with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2023 but ended up being claimed by the Colts on waivers. He has been with the team for the last two years as a developmental player, having previously played college ball at Florida A&M, an FCS school.

This training camp, Land looked like he began to put everything together, and could be ready to be a reliable rotation player in 2025. Sadly, the numbers game still had Land sixth at best in the team’s edge room, and it seems they couldn’t find a way to justify keeping a sixth. The team instead kept six DTs on their roster, which I personally disagreed with, especially with rookie Tim Smith already being waived to make room for a waiver claim, and Eric Johnson II leaving a lot to be desired on the field. As a result of their decision, the Colts will now have to watch Land continue his development in Dallas. Not getting him back on their practice squad makes waiving him already feel like a mistake, but if he becomes a real contributor with the Cowboys, the Colts will probably feel foolish.
