The Carolina Panthers‘ wide receiver room has undergone some remodeling in the past week — with changes that put more pressure on the team’s early draft choices at the position to come through in a big way at the beginning of the season. Carolina, just days after trading veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen back to the Minnesota Vikings, is bringing back Hunter Renfrow.
Renfrow spent 2024 out of football before getting a shot with Carolina in training camp this summer and his addition back to Carolina’s 53-man roster serves as a fun subplot for the start of the season. But his return turns out to be a bittersweet one for the Panthers and not just because of Thielen’s departure. Second-year wide receiver Jalen Coker is going on injured reserve to make room for Renfrow on the roster.

Coker’s designation on injured reserve will put him on the sideline for a minimum of four weeks due to a quad injury. According to The Athletic’s Joe Person, Coker’s injury could potentially push a little longer than the minimum required time but the overall window to return should be within the first half of the season. Coker’s absence is a bummer — he was a promising young talent as a rookie in 2024 and looked to capitalize on his offseason to build more chemistry with Bryce Young in a pivotal 2025 campaign.
Instead, it will be Renfrow joining Xavier Legette and Tetairoa McMillan to open the season as the pass catching targets to watch. Coker’s sweat equity from 2024 should allow him to assimilate back into the offense when he’s recovered. For Renfrow, he’ll look to take advantage of the extra reps and make sure that Coker’s return comes at someone else’s expense as he tries to revitalize his career after a year away from the game.
