‘Ready to rock, baby’ — Travis Kelce might not be as close to finished as many around the NFL have been quick to suggest
Tight end wants to be more explosive in 2025.
SÃO PAULO — Travis Kelce is 35 years old. He had two consecutive seasons with fewer than 1,000 receiving yards for the first time since 2015. But don’t be so quick to judge the star tight end. Kelce took this offseason particularly seriously. He’s leaner and, according to his own words, feels great to keep playing beyond 2025.
“For who? For me?,” Kelce answered when asked by Brazilian media if this was his so-called last dance. “Man, it’s the last one on the contract right now. But I’ll tell you what, I’m feeling young and I’m feeling ready to rock, baby.”
Mahomes interrupted to say “look how loose that shirt is, man.”
“This thing was a little tighter last year,” Kelce admitted. If this is the last dance after all, Kelce is getting ready to make it a special one.
Fine wine
The Chiefs had a practice on Thursday in São Paulo ahead of the Los Angeles Chargers game on Friday night, a divisional regular season opener. After the activity, head coach Andy Reid talked to the media and, well, he’s not ready to get away from his top receiving weapon.
“Time is different for him. He looks almost the same to us,” Reid pointed out. “He’s in a good place. He worked very hard this training camp and in the offseason. I know he’s looking forward to getting started. No differences.”
Last season was the least efficient of Kelce’s NFL career. He had an 84.9 passer rating when targeted, with a 7.2 average depth of target. With the Chiefs in a quest to be more explosive on offense, the veteran can go back to his better days underneath.
It’s fair to wonder how much volume Travis Kelce can handle—and how much he needs to throughout the regular season. But the future Hall of Famer is making sure that he will be in his best shape to make a real impact for as long as possible.
The new chapter starts on Friday, in South America.
