There’s a brewing quarterback controversy ahead of Cowboys’ next game, but Giants expert believes the outcome of it is clear (Update: NY ends speculation)
We know the Cowboys are playing the Giants in Week 2. We don’t know which quarterback, though.
UPDATE: As Joe DeLeone predicted in this article, New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll ended the controversy he started by officially naming Wilson his starting quarterback for Week 2. That means the Cowboys will face the veteran instead of first-round rookie Jaxson Dart.
The decision is not a surprise though a controversy was brewing because Daboll refused to confirm Wilson as QB1 on Sunday. For more insight on why the Giants are making a decision, keep reading this article that was published Monday morning speculating on what the team’s decision would be.
Daboll started Giants QB controversy ahead of Cowboys game
It’s only Monday but there’s already mystery looming over the Dallas Cowboys’ Week 2 matchup. The team will be looking for its first win of the season against the 0-1 New York Giants. What we don’t know, however, is who will they face at quarterback.
That’s because Giants head coach Brian Daboll refused to commit to Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback following an underwhelming debut on Sunday.
“Look, we’re going to get home,” Daboll said when asked if he would consider starting rookie Jaxson Dart next weekend. “We’re going to look at our game. Collectively, we’ve all got to do better.”
While Daboll claimed the loss didn’t fall on Wilson’s shoulders, he refused to confirm him as the starter even as reporters pressed him. Wilson completed 17-of-37 attempts (46%) for 168 yards and a 59.3 passer rating. Adding to the intrigue is the fact that Daboll likes Dart and played a major role in the team’s decision to draft him. Not to mention, time isn’t a resource the Giants head coach has as he’s considered one of the top hot seat coaches in the NFL this season.
Naturally, the Cowboys’ game planning for Week 2 will change drastically if it’s Dart they’re going to face. So I reached out to A to Z Sports’ Giants expert Joe DeLeone to get his insight on the situation. In his eyes, it’s clear what the decision will be.
Giants expert on what Daboll’s decision will be at quarterback
DeLeone: After just one week, it’s unlikely the Giants will turn to Jaxson Dart this quickly. Head coach Brian Daboll was extremely noncommittal about whether Russell Wilson will keep his job after their Week 1 loss to the Washington Commanders. However, it would be too soon to make this transition. Especially considering the offensive line’s poor play without left tackle Andrew Thomas. This does set the stage for a Week 5 takeover for Dart against the New Orleans Saints.
It would look incredibly panicked after one game to jump to their promising rookie. The coaching staff has emphasized their belief in Wilson all preseason. Having brought him in to provide veteran leadership, they’ll likely give him multiple chances to fail before benching him.
All that being said, if the offense is going to be that messy under Wilson, Daboll desperately needs to turn to Dart sooner rather than later to save his job. If the preseason excitement translates to highlight plays every week, it could be a rallying point for this franchise. Even if they finish with a losing record, ownership would have to think twice about separating Dart from Daboll if he strings together a promising twelve games. If Dart plays as he did in the preseason, there’s no reason he wouldn’t be in the Offensive Rookie of the Year conversation. Hiring a new coach could potentially derail his growth.
