Both teams are looking to recover from Week 1 losses to interdivisional opponents. The Cowboys fell on Thursday night to the Philadelphia Eagles, 24-20.
While in a national spotlight, we caught a glimpse of how effective the Cowboys’ defense is without star pass rusher Micah Parsons. After trading Parsons to the Green Bay Packers ahead of Week 1, it was assumed Dallas would struggle tremendously defensively. Instead, they only allowed 302 total yards to the Eagles.
Additionally, they significantly slowed down the Eagles’ passing attack, limiting them to 144 passing yards through the air. The most impressive and unexpected piece to the Cowboys’ performance was limiting Saquon Barkley to only 60 yards and 3.3 yards per carry. This came as a shock, as the Cowboys’ run defense was porous in 2024. The addition of veteran defensive tackle Kenny Clark, whom they added in the Parsons trade, appears to have boosted their interior defensive line.
An area of deficiency for Dallas that stood out was their lack of production from receivers not named Ceedee Lamb. George Pickens, who was acquired this offseason, only had 30 yards on three receptions. Their next leading receiver was KaVontae Turpin, with only two catches for 18 yards.
On the Giants’ side, they’re hoping to find any form of offense as they failed to score any touchdowns in their rough loss to the Commanders. This game will serve as an effective barometer for how the Giants’ season will progress, as the Cowboys should be an evenly matched challenge.
If the Giants struggle again, it could be the beginning of a brutal string of losses. A loss to Dallas could lead to a 0-4 record in September.
There is speculation that the Giants could turn to rookie Jaxson Dart as the starter or let him play after Brian Daboll was unclear about the quarterback situation on Sunday. It’s unlikely they make that transition just two weeks into the 2025 season, but Giants fans are looking for anything positive to latch onto.
