Andy Reid had conversation with NFL HC legend about acquiring player who has developed into a weapon for Chiefs’ offense
Great coaches recognize talent.
It’s good to have connections in the NFL.
Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid and former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick have dominated the league for over the past two decades. They’ve had a lot of big games against each other, but have also developed a deep respect and a friendship off the field.
Belichick is now in the college ranks as the head man at the University of North Carolina, last coaching the Patriots in 2023. Midway through the 2024 season, the Chiefs signed wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, who was waived by New England in November. He finished out the year on Kansas City’s practice squad.
Bill Belichick gives Tyquan Thornton his stamp of approval to Andy Reid
While speaking to the media on Wednesday, Reid revealed that he had a conversation with Belichick about the potential that Thornton brings to the table.
“So, Brett (Chiefs GM Brett Veach) liked him (Thornton),” Reid said. “Then I had mentioned before that Bill Belichick called me and talked to me about him. Thought he was good football player, and so Brett was bringing him in, and Bill kind of said, hey, this guy’s really got great potential. He’s fast, he’s a big target, he runs good routes.”
Thornton was impressive during training camp, consistently displaying his speed as a deep threat. He carried that over into the preseason, recording three receptions for 87 yards. In Week 1’s matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, Thornton caught a 38-yard pass that was crucial in the Chiefs converting a field goal just before halftime.
With WRs Xavier Worthy and Jalen Royals battling through injuries, Thornton’s role in K.C.’s offense could quickly expand. He has the speed to fill the void left behind by Worthy, and also possesses great size at 6-foot-2. The former second-round pick now has a golden opportunity to make his mark in the league.
