Kansas City Chiefs’ injury troubles continue to get worse in early goings of Week 2 Super Bowl rematch vs. Philadelphia Eagles
The Chiefs’ injury troubles are mounting in Week 2 against the Eagles.
Update: Mike Danna and Kristian Fulton were both ruled out.
The Kansas City Chiefs already had a pair of notable injuries heading into this game, with WRs Jalen Royals and Xavier Worthy ruled out. Now, they are dealing with a trio of injuries early in their Week 2 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
One injury occurred on the defensive line and another in the defensive secondary. The third injury happened at a position where the Chiefs can hardly afford it.
Chiefs veteran DE Mike Danna made a quick visit to the medical tent early in the first quarter after fewer than a dozen plays on defense. Trainers checked on him briefly before he emerged and went to the locker room. The team ruled him questionable to return to the game with a hip injury.
The injuries didn’t stop there, though. About six or seven plays later, Chiefs CB Kristian Fulton was injured. He was spotted on the training table for a few moments before eventually going back to the locker room with the training staff. He was quickly ruled doubtful to return to the game with an ankle injury.
Finally, the Chiefs saw rookie LT Josh Simmons exit the game with an injury early in the second quarter. He missed a few plays in a series as OT Jaylon Moore replaced him. He still has his helmet in his hands on the sideline, which suggests he’ll soon return to the game. The Chiefs have notably had a ton of trouble in recent years finding stability at left tackle. Thankfully, Simmons was back in the game on the ensuing drive, but it warrants monitoring as things go forward.
Injuries to Mike Danna and Kristian Fulton open opportunities for a pair of rookie defenders
These injuries mean that Kansas City and Steve Spagnuolo will be relying more on a pair of rookies. We already knew coming into the game that Chiefs third-round DE Ashton Gillotte was expected to get some more snaps, but without Danna, he’ll be out there with an even greater frequency. Chiefs third-round rookie CB Nohl Williams came into the game on a key third down because of Fulton’s injury. We could even see an uptick in special teams snaps for UDFA rookie CB Kevin Knowles, knowing that Williams will see an increased role on defense.
