‘You’ve got to call that’ – Andy Reid is the latest member of the Chiefs to express frustration with Eagles’ ‘Tush Push’ play
Chiefs HC Andy Reid speaks out about the controversial play.
When a team prepares to play the Philadelphia Eagles, it has to expect that they will run their controversial “Tush Push” play at some point.
The Eagles ran it several times against the Kansas City Chiefs during their Week 2 matchup, which Philadelphia won 20-17. The Chiefs’ defense stopped it twice, but the Eagles converted multiple first downs and one touchdown during their other tries.
The “Tush Push” has been very controversial as many claim that the Eagles commit numerous penalties while executing the play. The NFL competition committee nearly got it banned during the offseason, but fell short by two votes. Fox Sports NFL rules analyst Dean Blandino advocated that the play should not be legal during the Chiefs-Eagles broadcast.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid expresses frustration over “Tush Push” play
“If guys are moving early, then you’ve got to to call that,” Reid told Jesse Newell of The Athletic on Monday. “They’ll go back and look at that and see what their evaluation is. It could be different than mine. I felt like the guys were moving, that’s why I was griping about it on the sideline there with the officials. But, sometimes people see things different. So, we’ll see where it goes. They’ll have a chance to evaluate it and I’ll be curious to see what the response is.”
The key part of Reid’s statement is people seeing things differently. That lines up with the point that Blandino also made, that there is just too much gray area when trying to evaluate the play. Rules are supposed to be black and white, which the NFL has often times struggled with.
To many more observers than not, the Eagles are committing obvious fouls while running the “Tush Push,” most notably with their offensive linemen false starting. We’ll have to wait until the offseason to see if there’s another attempt to ban the play, but until then we could see NFL officials crack down and start throwing more flags against it.
