The Minnesota Vikings have one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL.
When general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah chose to select Jordan Addison at 23rd overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, it was evident that he wanted Justin Jefferson to have a running mate. We’ve seen how big an impact Addison has had on both Jefferson’s numbers and his own. In his two seasons, Addison has been incredibly productive, with over 850 yards in both seasons while having nine and 10 touchdowns as well.
Jordan Addison’s return is huge for Vikings
We know that Addison’s return is going to help out the Vikings’ offense, but how he does is the most important. Head coach Kevin O’Connell talked about how Addison will make the Vikings better.
“He’s very, very unique from a standpoint of his route running, his ability to use the tools of our offense, albeit motion, alignment and stacks and bunches and different variations of how we play, to be able to get on edges,” said O’Connell. “And then he’s got such unique separation ability throughout the different levels of routes. He can win early, can win late, and then he’s proven time and time again just how elite a catcher of the football he is.
“So I think that’s Jordan, the training camp he had. If you asked me to figure out the podium of first, second, and third place of the best training camps we had. He would, for sure, be on the podium. I don’t know exactly where he would be. We had some guys that had great camps, but he was as good as he’s ever been for us throughout, and hoping he can pick up right where he left off.”
O’Connell was right. Addison was phenomenal in training camp and built up quite the rapport with quarterback J.J. McCarthy. Plays like the one below are why that chemistry is so important, as they knew where each other was going to be.
O’Connell has always spoken highly of Addison regarding both his on-field ability and who he is off the field. When you watch him play, it’s evident that he fits this offense like a glove, mainly because he is same archetype as Jefferson. They play incredibly similar styles of football, and that makes life easier for O’Connell to scheme up passing concepts for one main reason: they create elite separation.
When you have two players who can do all of the same things, it helps you continue the illusion of complexity that O’Connell has made a major focus over his time in Minnesota. You can deceive defenses easily by having Jefferson and Addison swap responsibilities over the course of the game. With Addison’s return, that should be much easier for the offense to function.
Carson Wentz will have fun with the full repertoire of weapons.
