The Tennessee Vols’ game winning play against the Mississippi State Bulldogs probably looked a little familiar to fans.
Vols running back DeSean Bishop scored a touchdown on a 25 yard run on the first play of overtime in Tennessee’s 41-34 win over Mississippi State.
Bishop’s touchdown run looked remarkably similar to Georgia running back Nate Frazier’s 21 yard run on UGA’s first play in overtime against Tennessee earlier this month.
It wasn’t exactly the same formation or blocking scheme, but it was the same concept. And it worked.
Kirby Smart said Tennessee takes plays from other teams before Georgia’s win against the Vols
Josh Heupel and the Vols using a similar play as Georgia in the exact same situation is a bit ironic considering what Smart said before the Bulldogs’ game against the Vols.
Smart told reporters a couple of days before playing Tennessee that the Vols like to take plays from other teams and make them their own.
“I think they’ve used wrinkles from other teams,” said Smart of Tennessee’s offense. “They get all this tape of teams that play against you, and there’s certain plays that maybe don’t fit their offensive philosophy, but they’re good plays. And then they turn them into theirs, and do a good job of mixing, like everybody does. We call it copycat, but they’ll look at plays and say, ‘That play really works, how do we make it work for us?’ I think he’s done a great job of that over the years.”
Smart basically foreshadowed the Vols taking a play from Georgia’s playbook and making it their own.
But they, that’s what good teams do. And it won Tennessee a football game.
