The Tennessee Vols provided UT football fans with a relaxing Saturday night in front of the television (watching some great college football games) after pulling out a thrilling 41-34 overtime win against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. It’s always more fun to watch football on a Saturday night if your favorite team won earlier in the day.
Tennessee made some mistakes against the Bulldogs, but it also made some big plays in the game’s biggest moments.
And as a result, the Vols left Starkville with a hard-fought victory.
Former Alabama QB Greg McElroy has a new nickname for Tennessee after the Vols’ win against Mississippi State
Former Alabama quarterback turned ESPN analyst Greg McElroy has a nickname for Tennessee after the Vols played their second overtime game in the last three weeks. UT lost to Georgia in overtime earlier in September.
The Cardiac Vols.
“There were so many games (this weekend) in which I felt tremendous grit was shown by the team that was victorious,” said McElroy. “We’ll start with Tennessee going on the road to Mississippi State. [The Vols] got this game into overtime. Everyone’s kind of calling them the cardiac Vols right now. A little tightrope, dramatic comeback to force overtime. This was a really big win by Josh Heupel. I mean, you have to acknowledge that if they lose this game with what’s coming up on their schedule, it’s going to be a very uphill battle with the road trip to Tuscaloosa, and a handful of other games against ranked opponents.
“Like, they had to have this one. And Joey Aguilar did not have a flawless performance. But down the stretch, a 13-play, 75-yard drive to tie the game — capping it with that six-yard touchdown run. (DeSean) Bishop then seals the victory with the touchdown on the first play of overtime. This was a lot of poise under pressure against a team that was throwing haymakers. That was a very gutsy win from Tennessee.”
It was certainly a heart-stopping finish to the game for the Vols.
Cardiac Vols is an apt description of Tennessee in SEC play so far this season, though I’m sure fans would be more than OK with a couple of laughers over the next few weeks, with the Vols coming out on top, of course.
Tennessee fans and their hearts get a break next weekend with the Vols on a bye.

The national media refuses to admit it, but Tennessee’s win over Mississippi State proved the Vols are a championship caliber team
For a little while on Saturday afternoon, I thought the Tennessee Vols were heading for their second loss of the season. Tennessee’s 41-34 overtime win against the Mississippi State Bulldogs was ugly. It was full of mistakes — from execution on the field to coaching decisions on the sidelines. The Vols made some big plays, […]
