The Tennessee Vols moved to 4-1 on the season after their overtime win against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Starkville this past weekend.
It wasn’t a pretty win for Tennessee — the Vols made plenty of mistakes — but any win on the road in the SEC is a good win.
The Vols are just a missed field goal against the Georgia Bulldogs away from being 5-0.
Tennessee makes a move in latest SEC power rankings
A couple of national media outlets updated their SEC power rankings following this past weekend’s college football action.
CBS Sports moved the Vols from No. 13 to No. 12 in their power rankings (they have Tennessee power ranked above LSU and Texas).
“The offensive juggernaut had to rally to beat a resurgent Mississippi State team on the road in one of the more entertaining games Saturday,” noted CBS Sports Brandon Marcello. “The Vols have scored 40 or more points in every game, marking the first time in program history through five games. They’re the first team in the FBS since 2021 (Pitt) to do so.”
ESPN, meanwhile, moved the Vols from No. 14 to No. 13 in their updated SEC power rankings.
“[Wide receiver Chris] Brazzell taking a nice step forward wasn’t necessarily surprising, but he has enjoyed a total star turn,” wrote ESPN’s Bill Connelly. “He had six catches for 105 yards and a touchdown against Mississippi State, and his fourth-down reception with five minutes left set up a late tying touchdown. The Vols eventually prevailed in overtime, 41-34. Brazzell’s heroics — and those of quarterback Joey Aguilar, of course — have been a necessity because the Tennessee defense has not clicked thus far in 2025. The Vols allowed 16.1 points per game in 2024, but after Saturday they’re allowing 29.0 points per game in 2025. That’s also quite a surprise.”
Tennessee is off this weekend before returning to action on October 11 in a home game against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Mississippi State head coach Jeff Lebby’s comments after loss to the Vols aren’t fair to Tennessee’s players
The Tennessee Vols and the Mississippi State Bulldogs played a wild game in Starkville on Saturday evening. Both teams played sloppily at times — turnovers, penalties, and missed assignments hurt both teams. The Vols, however, were able to prevail in overtime, thanks to a goal-line stand from Tennessee’s defense that preserved the 41-34 win for […]
