Tennessee Vols junior linebacker Arion Carter had a massive game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs this past weekend.

Carter, a former four-star recruit, totaled 17 tackles and one tackle for loss in the Vols’ 41-34 overtime win over the Bulldogs.

The Tennessee native currently leads the SEC in total tackles with 49.

Arion Carter was battling a tough injury during Tennessee’s win against Mississippi State

The fact Carter even played against Mississippi State is amazing.

VolQuest’s Austin Price joined 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will on Tuesday and noted that Carter is dealing with a turf toe injury.

“He’s battling some turf toe,” said Price when asked about Carter. “He’s really gutting through it. The kid is tough, man. He really is. And [he is] such a good kid. Really impressed by his perseverance on Saturday, because he could’ve easily just not made the trip. But he was adamant about playing. He went out there and made 17 tackles, really a fantastic job by him.”

Carter played 65 snaps against Mississippi State. The only defensive players for the Vols who played more snaps than Carter were defensive backs Colton Hood, Ty Redmond, Andre Turrentine, and Edrees Farooq.

Turf toe can be a brutal injury that keeps guys sidelined for weeks. Carter, though, doesn’t appear to have any intentions of sitting out because of it.

The good news for Carter and the Vols is that Tennessee is off this weekend before hosting the Arkansas Razorbacks on October 11, which gives the talented linebacker some time to get healthy.
