Eagles add defensive line depth ahead of Week 5 matchup vs Broncos
The Eagles made a handful of roster moves on Thursday as they prepare to face Denver.
The Philadelphia Eagles added some defensive line help ahead of their Week 5 matchup against the Denver Broncos this Sunday.
The team reported on Thursday afternoon that they had signed defensive tackle Jacob Sykes and defensive end K.J. Henry to the practice squad. In corresponding moves, the team released cornerback Eli Ricks and outside linebacker Antwaun Powell-Ryland.
Eagles Bring Back Familiar Face
A former fifth-round pick by the Washington Commanders in 2023, Henry has appeared in 14 regular-season games between Washington, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Dallas Cowboys. He has racked up a combined 22 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and two passes defended.
It’s worth noting that Henry isn’t a new face to Philly after finishing the 2024 season on the Eagles’ practice squad and returning this past offseason for training camp before signing with the Cleveland Browns.
Just like Henry, Sykes is also a familiar face. He comes to Philly after playing for the San Antonio Brahmas in the United Football League. Before entering the league, Sykes began his college career at Harvard before transferring to UCLA. He went undrafted in 2023 and signed with the Seattle Seahawks as a free agent for a short stint.
Sykes had also previously crossed paths with Eagles senior defensive assistant/defensive line coach Clint Hurtt. The two were both in Seattle during the 2023 NFL offseason, when Hurtt was serving as the Seahawks’ defensive coordinator.
Despite being undefeated, the Eagles are struggling with getting to opposing quarterbacks right now and have racked up just five sacks heading into Week 5. Although Henry and Sykes can’t solve that issue, their presence adds valuable competition to the defensive line during practice.
As for Ricks and Antwaun Powell-Ryland, this is not the first time they’ve been released. Fans can might see their names show up on roster moves again at some point this season.
